Studying Medicine in Romania: What Nepali Students Should Know

Becoming a doctor is one of the most respected goals a young Nepali student can have. But medical education in Nepal is expensive, competitive, and limited in seats.

Every year, thousands of Nepali students look abroad for a better path to their medical degree.

Romania has become one of the most popular destinations – and for very good reason.

Romanian medical universities are accredited by the European Union, teach in English, and produce graduates who can practice medicine across the world – including Nepal, the UK, Australia, and the Middle East.

At Conachi Academy, we have helped many Nepali students navigate the process of studying medicine in Romania. This blog tells you everything you need to know – from entry requirements and program structure to student life and career prospects after graduation.

Why Romania for Medicine?

Before diving into the details, here is why Romania makes sense specifically for Nepali medical students:

  • EU-recognised degree – your Romanian medical degree is valid across Europe and recognised in many countries worldwide
  • English-taught programs – most medical universities offer full programs in English, so you do not need to speak Romanian to study
  • No entrance exam required – most Romanian medical universities admit students based on academic results, not a separate entrance test
  • 6-year integrated program – you graduate with a full MD (Doctor of Medicine) degree
  • Strong clinical training – Romanian universities have large teaching hospitals with real patient exposure from early years
  • Lower competition – admission is more accessible than Nepal’s highly competitive MBBS entrance system
  • Growing Nepali student community – you will find fellow Nepali students already established in Romanian cities

What Degree Will You Get?

Medical programs in Romania are structured as a 6-year integrated undergraduate program leading to a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. There is no separate bachelor’s degree before this – you go directly into the full medical program after completing your school education.

  • Program length: 6 years
  • Degree awarded: Doctor of Medicine (MD) / Licentiate in Medicine
  • Language of instruction: English (for international student tracks)
  • Credit system: European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) – compatible with all EU universities

After completing the 6-year program, graduates must complete a residency (internship) program before practising independently. This is the same in Nepal, the UK, and most other countries.

Entry Requirements for Nepali Students

Academic Requirements

To be admitted to a medical program in Romania, Nepali students generally need:

  • Completion of Grade 12 (NEB or A-Level) with a strong result
  • Biology and Chemistry as compulsory subjects at school level – these are essential for medicine
  • Minimum grade requirements vary by university – generally strong results in science subjects are expected
  • Some universities may require a minimum grade of B or above in biology and chemistry

Age Requirement

  • Most Romanian medical universities require students to be at least 18 years old at the time of enrollment

Language Requirements

  • Since programs are taught in English, you need to demonstrate basic English proficiency
  • Most universities accept a school-leaving certificate taught in English as proof – a separate IELTS or TOEFL is often not required
  • However, some universities may request an English language certificate – check individual university requirements on our Universities page

No Entrance Exam

Unlike Nepal’s MBBS entrance exam or the MCAT in the USA, most Romanian medical universities do not require a separate entrance examination. Admission is based on your school results and a review of your academic documents. This is one of the biggest advantages for Nepali students.

Check our How to Apply page for a full breakdown of the admission process.

The Application Process: Step by Step

Applying to a Romanian medical university as a Nepali student involves several steps. Here is how it works:

Step 1 – Choose Your University and Program

Romania has several well-known medical universities. Each has slightly different requirements, locations, and program strengths. Conachi Academy helps you identify the right university for your academic profile. Browse our Universities page to explore options.

Step 2 – Prepare Your Documents

You will need to gather and prepare the following documents:

  • Original Grade 12 certificate and transcripts (NEB or equivalent)
  • Certified English translation of all academic documents
  • Valid passport (minimum 2 years validity)
  • Birth certificate with certified English translation
  • Passport-size photographs
  • Medical fitness certificate
  • Motivation letter or personal statement (required by some universities)

Our team at Conachi Academy guides you through every document – what is needed, how to get it certified, and how to present it correctly. Visit our Admission page for the full document checklist.

Step 3 – Submit Your Application

Applications are submitted to the university – either directly or through Conachi Academy as an authorised representative. We handle the submission process on your behalf to make sure everything is correct and on time.

Check our Dates & Deadlines page to know when applications open and close for each intake.

Step 4 – Receive Your Acceptance Letter

Once your application is reviewed and approved, the university will issue an official Acceptance Letter (Letter of Admission). This is the document you need to apply for your student visa.

Step 5 – Apply for Your Student Visa

With your Acceptance Letter, you apply for a Romanian Long-Stay Student Visa (D/SD) at the Romanian Embassy or Consulate in Kathmandu. Required documents typically include:

  • Valid passport
  • Acceptance letter from the university
  • Proof of financial means (bank statement)
  • Proof of accommodation in Romania
  • Health insurance
  • Visa application fee payment

Step 6 – Travel and Enroll

After your visa is approved, you travel to Romania and complete the enrollment process at your university. You will also need to apply for a Temporary Residence Permit within 90 days of arrival.

Language: Do You Need to Learn Romanian?

This is one of the most common questions Nepali students ask. Here is the honest answer:

For classes: No. Your lectures, textbooks, exams, and all academic work will be in English on the international student track.

For clinical years: Partially. When you work with patients in years 5 and 6, many patients will speak only Romanian. You will need basic conversational Romanian to communicate with them. Most universities provide Romanian language classes in the first two years specifically for this reason.

For daily life: Basic Romanian helps a lot. Shop staff, transport workers, and people outside the university may not speak English – especially in smaller cities. Learning basic phrases makes daily life much easier.

Bottom line: You can study medicine in Romania without being fluent in Romanian – but learning the basics is strongly recommended. Our partner AMC Nepal offers Romanian language training in Kathmandu before you travel.

Common Challenges and How to Handle Them

Academic difficulty in Years 1 and 2 The pre-clinical years are very demanding. Many students struggle with the volume of content – especially Anatomy. Study in groups, stay consistent, and never fall behind. Catching up in medicine is very hard.

Homesickness Living far from family is emotionally hard. Stay connected with family regularly. Join the Nepali student community in your city. Give yourself time to adjust – most students feel much better after the first semester.

Language barrier in clinical years Start learning Romanian from Year 1 – do not wait until you need it in the hospital. Even basic conversational Romanian makes your clinical years much smoother.

Administrative processes Visa renewals, residence permit extensions, and university enrollment renewals happen every year. These processes can be confusing. Conachi Academy’s Support & Guidance team helps you stay on top of every deadline.
